THE PURPOSE

A meaningful reason to write and create.

ELAvate connects literacy instruction with students’ own experiences, ideas, and aspirations. Writing, art, reflection, and project-based learning create opportunities to develop academic skills alongside self-awareness, relationships, and engagement. It gives elementary teams a way to bring these priorities together during instruction.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

What students work on

Writing with purpose

Each module includes a focused writing assignment. Students organize and communicate ideas while connecting academic work to their lives. The curriculum is designed as a writing supplement rather than a replacement for an entire literacy program.

Art and thought expression

Art is central to ELAvate’s student journals. Students use visual expression alongside writing to explore ideas, reflect on experiences, and develop their voice. Journal activities address many art standards while connecting creative work with literacy and essential life skills.

Self-awareness and self-management

Students reflect on their experiences, emotions, and choices. Activities connect that reflection to habits that support participation, persistence, and learning.

Relationships and responsible decisions

Social awareness, relationship skills, and decision-making are woven into academic content. Discussion and collaborative activities give students opportunities to consider perspectives and connect with classmates.

A positive future self

A dedicated Future Self module invites students to imagine possibilities, consider goals, and connect present choices with the person they want to become.

Grade-appropriate projects

The K–6 sequence uses project-based activities to connect writing and essential skills. The curriculum’s emphasis on students’ own experiences gives learners an accessible starting point for participation.

RESEARCH & APPROACH

Research-backed learning, developed for the classroom.

Developed through the Montgomery County Educational Service Center, ELAvate was created in partnership with singer, songwriter, and mental health advocate Jewel. It is identified by the provider as a CASEL Promising Program, combining literacy with essential life skills.

ELAvate reports a University of Dayton evaluation using DESSA measures, with greater positive change in participating classrooms than in comparison classrooms. Teachers also reported stronger classroom connection. These findings describe the studied implementation; they are not a guarantee of an individual school’s outcomes.

ELAvate meets all Common Core writing standards for grades K–6, addresses many art standards, and aligns with the five CASEL competencies. K12 Wellness can help your team review the grade-level materials and their fit with your own curriculum priorities.
